Title Literature and policy review on prevention and services
Authors

Mary Godfrey and Jean Townsend,

Date Submitted to the Inquiry October 2005
Details

This review was commissioned to lay the groundwork for the Inquiry's Stage 2 work on prevention, services and support.

It provides a comprehensive overview of evidence about mental health problems in later life.  It covers depression and anxiety, suicide and self harm, dementia, schizophrenia, and alcohol and substance misuse.

The review presents facts and figures and key issues in prevention, access to services and support, interventions and treatment.  It also presents the perspectives of older people and experts working in the field.

This report identifies the voices of older people with mental health problems and their carers as a major gap in the current evidence base.  To fill this gap, the Inquiry commissioned research on the views and experiences of older people and carers (see #2 below).

Author

Date Submitted to the Inquiry October 2006
Details

This report presents the results of research on the views and experiences of older people with mental health problems and their carers.  It follows on from the literature and policy review (see #1 above) which identified this as a major gap in the evidence base.

This research included a scoping study, interviews and group discussions with older people and carers in four study sites across the UK: East Belfast in Northern Ireland, Cardiff & the Vale in Wales, Dumfries & Galloway in Scotland, and Trafford in England.

The report identifies 5 cross-cutting themes and 6 priority areas for consideration by the Inquiry Board.
